Naomi grew up in Delaware where she discovered at an early age that she had a talent for running. She ran in non-club environments like elementary school and junior high school Physical Education classes. She also ran for her church a few times as a youth. After she entered High School her talent blossomed and lead to her becoming a sprinter for Smyrna High School. Her favorite race was the 200 meters. This event was just right for her – not too short and not too long.
After hanging up her spikes, Naomi married Calvin in 1981. As a young Air Force family, Calvin received a transfer to an Air Force Base in Georgia. It was while stationed in Georgia, that Naomi discovered her gift for helping youth as a church leader. It is an area she excelled in and enjoyed.
Naomi and Calvin later moved their family to Las Vegas. Here she established her career in business. She graduated from Dana McKay Business College and held various positions from secretary/administrative assistant to management. Some of the roles she held in these positions where: project management, creating systems and procedures, developing processes to streamline and help memberships and branches to facilitate efficient operations. Busy. Yes. But, this did not extinguish her fire to help our youth.
While supporting various track teams, Naomi learned from some of the best coaches in Southern Nevada. She studied the various philosophies and training workouts they used and encourages their use to this day. By forming the Las Vegas Elite Runners with help from Calvin and parents whose athletes wanted to partner into one team, Naomi made it possible for cross country runners around the city, whether they were experienced or beginners, to realize the dream of running together. The results of this union were beautiful on and off the course. The team became the first that we know of in Las Vegas to advance from association, to regionals, then Junior Nationals in cross country via USA Track and Field. The most impressive accomplishment of the Las Vegas Elite Runners was providing a platform for its runners that resulted in their receipt of scholarships to further their education and higher learning beyond high school.
Naomi’s love and affections for our youth and those in need materialized at an early age and was manifested through church where she realized this was her calling. Naomi’s motherly nature will always keep our youth’s well-being at the forefront of all she does. Her personal and spiritual strengths; as well as, her ability to maximize individual resources and energies will always make the Las Vegas Elite Runners a top-notch Track and Field and Cross Country club that pursues the very best results for its athletes.
