The San Diego RoadRunners Cross Country Meet – Great Weather and Great Competition
On Sunday November 10, 2019, the Las Vegas Elite Runners participated in the San Diego RoadRunners Cross Country meet and got a glimpse of the regional course. The course at Kit Carson Park offered a nice variation of dirt, grass, soft gravel and concrete running surfaces. The shaded trees, two cascading hills and a long-fast downhill drop presented a nice challenge for our runners.
Roland ran well and learned a few lessons in his race. After not paying attention and getting left behind at the start, he had to work hard to move up to a respectable position. Time-wise he probably ran his best race of the year because he had to fight and be aggressive to get back in the race. Even though he is only six years old, Roland continually gets better with each race. Overall, he did an excellent job of managing the course and posting an excellent time of 9:22.
Jordan also ran well especially on the hills where he passed several runners. He was in good position for most of the race but didn’t take advantage of the gradual downhill portion of the course to pass or hold his position. This was a good test for Jordan because he now knows the course and where he needs to focus. Jordan finished strong and placed 18th. When we return for regionals, he’ll need to be strong in all three phases of the course.
Lilianah ran well too. It seems, the bigger the race the better she runs. She too was good on the hills but gave up positioning in the first half of the race. She was very good over the last 1500m that included a steep uphill climb, and this is where she passed several runners. As Lilianah approached the chute, I could see her relaxing and the runner behind her closing fast. While she ran a good race, her finish will need to be better at regionals. Lilianah finished 35 out 94 runners.
Christoph, Jeramiah and Kaiyah did their best but where well off their PRs. Each will need to up their game if they want to PR and be at their best at year end. Janae Fields has shown great promise in practice but did not run in this meet.
